My personal inquiries were satisfied, and I also learned much about other teachers’ and students’ lifestyles. The students who took my English classes took opportunities to ask questions when they didn’t understand something and often asked for examples of usage when learning a new word. Teaching my older students, such as the staff and teacher classes, was intimidating at first. But as I understood their needs and concerns, I was able to better meet them and teach them what they wanted to learn. These conversations also led to cultural exchanges that impacted how I approached teaching them. As I mentioned before, there is a large difference between the students in Canada and Japan. And learning how to help them has made me a better teacher.

My impression of the general OUE student body varied. Some students were quite self-motivated, determined to improve their English, and excited about the prospect of studying and possibly working abroad. I admired the international students I met that had moved far away from their families and were now both studying and working in a foreign language to support themselves. I was impressed by the Japanese students that had never once visited an English-speaking country, yet through self-study and working at establishments that welcome tourists, they had built strong conversation skills on their own merit.
My favorite classes to teach were my English lessons for graduate students and professors of the school. The students were enthusiastic and willing to try new activities. They regularly asked questions and were not afraid to make mistakes and ask for feedback. I noticed the most improvement in these students over the 10 weeks I taught.
All in all, I felt comfortable working at OUE, and I was lucky to make some great connections with the staff, faculty, and students. Everyone was very welcoming and helpful. I hope the school continues to develop its international department and encourages its students to seek out study and work opportunities abroad.
