About 90 Years Ago— The Birth of a School in the Mercantile City of Osaka

About 90 years ago, a new school was born here in Osaka, the commercial capital of Japan.
It was a school founded at the request of Osaka’s business community, with the goal of
nurturing individuals who would shoulder the future of Osaka and of Japan.
In the early 1930s, Osaka was a vibrant city with a population of 2.1 million
—surpassing Tokyo at the time— and ranked as the sixth-largest city in the world.
What aspirations did the students of that era hold as they studied?
What thoughts did the faculty and staff have as they supported those students and operated the school?

Now, about 90 years later, as we approach the university’s 100th anniversary in 2032,
we strongly feel the need to envision a new stage for our institution.

What was the original purpose of establishing Osaka University of Economics?
What should we strive to achieve in the years to come, and what kind of value should we provide to society?

By returning to our roots and reinterpreting and reconstructing our founding spirit
—the very source of everything—we have redefined our philosophy, mission, and the vision
we aim to realize by 2032. Through this process, we have shaped a future and an ideal form
for our university.
